small amount red yarn, 100% acrylic or cotton, DK weight
small amount green yarn, 100% acrylic or cotton, DK weight
size 2 and size 6 dpns
needle to weave in ends
pattern requirements:
using red yarn cast on 50 stitches with size 2 needles, using backwards "e" cast on
divide across needles, place marker, join in round
knit until piece measures 1 inch
switch to size 6 needles knit until piece measures 3 1/2 to 4 inches with edge rolled
begin tomato top pattern:
1) knit 4 stitches in red, *knit 1 stitch in green, knit 9 stitches in red* knit 1 stitch in green, knit 5 stitches in red
2) knit 3 stitches in red, *knit 3 stitches in green, knit 7 stitches in red* knit 3 stitches in green, knit 4 stitches in red
3) knit 2 stitches in red, *knit 5 stitches in green, knit 5 stitches in red* knit 5 stitches in green, knit 3 stitches in red
4) continue in established color pattern while beginning decreases as follows:
5) in red stitches only, k2, k2tog, k1, keeping green stitches even
6) work an even round in color pattern
7) in red stitches only, k1, k2tog, k1, keeping green stitches even
8) in red stitches only, slip 1, k2tog, psso, keeping green stitches even, cut red yarn
9) using only green yarn, decrease last red stitches by doing the following: when you come to a red stitch, k2tog to eliminate it
10) now you should have 5 leaves only left on your needles, 5 stitches each, decrease as follows, *ssk, k1, k2tog*
11) *slip 1, k2tog, psso*, you should now have 5 stitches left
.12)work I-cord for 1 inch, draw thread through remaining stitches and weave in ends
This hat can be knit in orange for pumpkins (think Halloween and fall) yellow for a lemon, purple for an eggplant or with duplicate stitch black “seeds” for a strawberry
